The Benghazi Plant

Cement production in Benghazi expanded steadily throughout the 1970s. The first phase began with Benghazi Line 1 in 1972, with a design capacity of 200,000 tons per year. This was followed by Line 2 in 1974 and Line 3 in 1976, each with a capacity of 400,000 tons per year, bringing the Benghazi plants’ total design capacity to approximately one million tons annually. As part of the company’s expansion, Hawari Lines 1 and 2 were commissioned in 1978, each with a design capacity of 500,000 tons per year. Together, they added another one million tons of annual capacity, bringing the combined Benghazi and Hawari design capacity to approximately two million tons per year. In 2010, a major upgrade to Benghazi Line 3 increased its capacity from 400,000 to 500,000 tons per year, improving efficiency and adding 100,000 tons of annual output. These developments strengthened the plants’ role as a major pillar of cement production in Libya. Today, they contribute approximately 45% of national production and support the local labor market with around 1,000 employees.

The Fataiah Plant, Derna

Al-Fataiah Cement Plant is one of the facilities of Libyan Cement Company. It is located in the Al-Fataiah area on the outskirts of the city of Derna. The plant was established by the main contractor, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan. The supply of materials, equipment, and machinery began in 1981, and actual production started in January 1984 with the first cement shipment. The plant has two production lines with a design capacity of 1,000,000 tons per year. It is considered one of the largest cement plants in Libya and the region.

Developing works at the Fataiah Plant

The following major developments and investments were carried out between 2006 and 2008.

  • Replacement of the main electrostatic precipitators with bag filters and installation of a more effective filtration system to improve production quality and reduce emissions.
  • Major repairs to the heat exchanger stages to improve production efficiency and reduce energy costs.
  • Replacement of parts of the planetary clinker coolers for the kilns, improving production efficiency and reducing fuel consumption.
